Overview

Prose is designed from the ground up to be a local-first, privacy-respecting ePub and PDF reader. We believe your reading habits, library collection, highlights, and notes should belong to you. Therefore, Prose is built to run entirely on your own hardware without transmitting data to us or any third parties.

1. No Data Collection

Prose does not collect, monitor, store, or transmit any personal data.

  • No Telemetry: We do not gather usage statistics, crash logs, or activity patterns.
  • No Tracking: There are no advertising trackers, analytics packages, or marketing SDKs integrated into the application.
  • No Accounts: You do not need to register an account or provide an email address to use Prose.

2. Local Storage

All data created or imported within Prose is stored locally on your device. This includes:

  • Your library catalog (metadata, book names, authors, and cover art).
  • Your book files (.epub and .pdf format).
  • Your bookmarks, text highlights, and progress locator records.
  • Your custom reading configuration settings.

This data is saved in a secure SQLite database and filesystem storage within the application sandbox. It never leaves your device unless you choose to configure cloud synchronization.

3. WebDAV Synchronization

Prose offers an optional synchronization feature that connects to a WebDAV server of your choice. If you choose to enable this feature:

  • Your book files, reading positions, bookmarks, highlights, and settings will be synchronized directly with your own WebDAV server.
  • All transmissions are performed over a secure, encrypted HTTPS protocol.
  • We do not operate any synchronization servers. We never see, transit, or store your WebDAV server credentials or book database files.
  • Your WebDAV server username and password are saved directly in your operating system's native secure credential store (such as Apple Keychain on macOS/iOS or Windows Credential Manager) and are never stored in plaintext.

4. Third-Party Services

Because Prose runs locally and syncs directly to your own server, the application does not communicate with any third-party APIs. There are no external databases, hosting providers, or CDNs involved in your daily reading workflow.
